* More information on the starred items in your 10-Step Carbon Addiction Program:
5. There are many books and websites where you can find extensive information on Global Warming and Climate Change. www.350.org will give you the basics on the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. www.iceworks.org has two comprehensive lists of essential readings and other resources.
6. Carbon Footprint tests:
Below we list several Carbon Footprint tests. We suggest that you at least take a quick test now. When you have time, gather your utility bills and calculate your transportation expenses for a more in depth result. We would appreciate a report of your results.
Most of the websites provide information and suggestions for improving your carbon footprint.
http://liveneutral.com - based on offsets, gives information on how to offset your emissions
7. A partial list of actions you can take, starting now:
(This list is taken directly from the Climate Walk flier. In the next months we will revise and improve this list. Please send your suggestions and comments.)
Individually you can: *Walk, bike, stay home - instead of driving. Consolidate errands. Car pool. Buy local. *Go to bed early - don’t burn the midnight fuels. *Change all light bulbs to compact fluorescent. *Heat your house less in winter, cool it less in summer. Improve insulation. Get an energy audit. *Explore solar, wind and geothermal energy options. *Go vegetarian or simply eat less meat, milk, eggs – Meat, dairy and poultry industries create lots of carbon and methane gases. Local, home-raised & free-range are good. * Raise vegetables in yards, on patios, on rooftops; Transform your lawn to vegetable & fruit gardens. *Trade in your gas guzzler for a hybrid and/or drive at 55 – 60 miles. *Use public transit – buses & trains – when you can. *Opt for non-stop daytime flights if you must fly. Buy carbon offsets. *Recycle, re-use, renovate – new products require more energy. *Conserve water. Drink tap water. No plastic bottles.
At the local and national levels Demand that your government: *Mandate global warming education in all curricula *Develop local & national transit systems *Legislate low emission standards for vehicles *Develop and use alternate fuels – solar, wind, etc. *Eliminate subsidies for high carbon food industries *Subsidize small, diversified farms *Encourage private gardens, fund school gardens *Maximize tree planting and tree health everywhere *Phase out coal use entirely. Clean coal is an oxymoron.
9. Send your stories, reports, and suggestions to the CAP blog (www.10stepcap.blogspot.com) regularly, to build momentum for our group effort. In the next months we hope to develop ways to increase our visibility and outreach. An active group will make this all the more possible.
NEW! September 2009 We are launching the trial stage of this brand new program. We hope that it will become a broadly used tool in the Global Effort to mitigate the Climate Crisis.
Sign up now as one of the first 100 members. Your feedback will help us complete the trial stage and prepare for a full launch.

NOTES
1. Whether this is your first step or you have been aware for months or years of your place in our carbon-addicted culture, signing on to this project can help build a concerted public effort.
2. The understanding of the magnitude of the threat of global warming can lead to anxiety and even despair. Participating in a joint effort to reduce the threat will help decrease the sense of hopelessness.
3. Recognizing urgency is a positive way of stepping up our efforts.
4. Since this is a public problem, working with others is essential and can decrease our sense of isolation.
5. An educated public is a powerful force. We need to understand causes, possible outcomes, and solutions.*
6. CAP can provide you with a Carbon Footprint test or you can find one online.*
7. CAP has lists of actions to choose from or you can identify actions on your own.*
8. This is not an anonymous program. Talk about it to others. CAP can suggest ways of letting others know what you’re doing.
9. Building a successful public program depends on a perception of accomplishment and success. Stories and pictures create a vision that will inspire others.*
10. Efforts to curb carbon emissions need to spread like wildfire. If each of us can encourage others to take meaningful steps, we will increase the power of our actions exponentially. Get everyone you know to sign on to 10-Step CAP.
